HOW MUCH

WATER SHOULD I CONSUME

ON A DAILY BASIS?

To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of water throughout the day.

What amount of water should you drink on a daily basis? When the temperature outside soars, you know how important it is to drink enough water. Staying hydrated is a daily essential, regardless of the weather. Unfortunately, many of us, particularly the elderly, do not drink enough water. "Thirst in older people is not as great as it was when they were younger. This could be a problem if they're using a diuretic or another drug that causes fluid loss "Dr. Julian Seifter, a kidney specialist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, agrees.

  • The advantages of drinking water

Water ensures the proper functioning of all the body's systems. Water fulfills a number of functions, such as:

  1. transporting nutrients and oxygen to the cells.

  2. eliminating bacteria from the bladder,

  3. aiding digestion and preventing constipation.

  4. controlling body temperature maintaining electrolyte (sodium) balance

  5. adjust blood pressure

  6. stabilize the heart rate

  7. cushion joints

  8. protect organs and tissues

Being hydrated means giving your body adequate fluids to perform these functions.

If you don't drink enough water every day, you run the risk of becoming dehydrated. Weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion and black urine are all signs of dehydration.

So how much water should you drink every day? The average person needs four to six glasses of water a day.

  • How much water should you consume on a daily basis?

The four-to-six-cup rule is for persons who are generally healthy. If you have thyroid disease or kidney, liver, or heart problems, or if you're taking medications that cause you to retain water, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opiate pain relievers, and some antidepressants, you could drink too much water.

If you fall into that category, how much water should you drink every day? There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. According to Dr. Seifter, water consumption must be tailored to the individual, and if you're unsure about the proper amount for you, consult your doctor.

Even a healthy person's water requirements will vary, especially if you're sweating much while exercising or if you're outside on a hot day. If you're unsure how much water to drink on those occasions, consult your doctor, but a good rule of thumb for healthy people is two to three cups every hour, or more if you're sweating profusely.

  • Dehydration prevention advice

Hydration isn't only about drinking water. Water is present in all beverages, thus they help you meet your daily requirements. It's also a fallacy that caffeinated or alcoholic beverages dehydrate you by making you pee. They do, but the water in these beverages still contributes to total fluid consumption in a net positive way over the course of the day.

There are a variety of reasons why water is still the better option. Sugary drinks can cause weight gain and inflammation, which can put you at risk for diseases like diabetes. Caffeine overdose can cause restlessness and make it difficult to sleep. In addition, women should have one drink each day and men should have 1-2 drinks per day.

Drink water gradually throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Drinking a drink at each meal, as well as socially or with medicine, is a simple method to do this.

Also, remember that water-rich foods like salads, fruit, and applesauce provide you with fluids.
